American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) is a coding standard that can be used for interchanging information, if the information is expressed mainly by the written form of English words.

This blog is the manner in which I will interchange information with you, the reader, expressed mainly in the written form of English words. I, in case you were wondering, am Dan.

That, hopefully, explains the name.

A little about me:

I went to college believing I was going to be an English teacher. But less than a week after graduation, I found myself on a ladder, painting houses for a living. That week stretched through summer, and summer turned to fall. And then the snow started to fly. Painting stinks in the winter, so I had to find a new job.

I stumbled into a gig as a newspaper reporter and found quickly that I had an aptitude for it. Later, I became a columnist, a newsroom manager and an editorial writer. I did those things well, and picked up a few awards for my work along the way.

Early in my career I discovered the power of the Internet. And once Google launched, I could find anything I wanted. It made life as an investigative journalist a whole lot easier, that much is certain.

Several years ago, I brought the Internet to a small and stagnating weekly newspaper company, where I’d been hired as managing editor. I led the effort to launch a real news and information portal, one that’s grown nicely over the years and has been recently named one of the state’s best community news sites. Shortly after that launch, I spearheaded the development of the company’s new media division, and launched about 40 websites and online properties over the past few years.

I’ve recently left the newspaper business and started a web development company (which you can find at codemunkeys.com) with a buddy of mine. I’m also working on a very long-term original music project, which you can find at nightlitemary.com.

As you’ll soon find, I’m actively addicted to Yankees baseball, gadgetry of all kinds, and soda. Lots and lots of soda.

Thanks for coming to check out my blog. For me, it’s just a way to share my opinions, educated and otherwise, about the industry I’ve abandoned, the industry I’ve just entered, and the small things in life that provide me with my daily doses of joy and agitation.
